The sensor sends electric signals to the controller proportional to the amount of vibration it experiences like a piezo-electric guitar pickup. When submerged in oil the vibration is damped, so when the oil level falls below the probe the vibration increases. The controller grounds out the ignition primary coil after increased vibration signals are detected for a certain period of time.
